Sophie Hulme has been on the radar of fashion editors for a while now. Her super-chic, boxy totes that feature gleaming gold hardware and luxe leathers are a five-time Selfridges sell-out. But it wasn’t just the bags that stole the show of the Elle Talent Launch Pad winner’s first on-schedule presentation yesterday. Inspiration notes read “toy dinosaurs”, but this influence was so delicately executed through dinosaur shaped, wool lace cut outs, on shift dresses, pencil skirts and silk blouses, that there was nothing childlike about it. Stylishly streamlined coats with contrasting sleeves, mohair and cashmere fisherman-inspired knits and brass embroidered dresses made for a collection of clean shapes with a masculine edge. “I love my pieces to be anchored in something classic, but with a Sophie Hulme twist, grown up but with a sense of humour,” says Hulme. “I really love the functionality of menswear, it starts from a practical viewpoint, which I find leads to interesting details.”
