The clue to Peter Jensen’s inspiration for A/W 12 was on the invitation – as it so often is with the Danish designer, whose collections are kick-started by the narrative or personal style of his chosen muse. This season, a simple title, Thelma, and a crossword referred to his friendship with milliner Thelma Speirs (one-half of the label Bernstock Speirs).
“It was time to have a muse within my own circle,” said the designer, whose previous muses have included Helena Rubinstein and Olympic skater Tonya Harding. “Thelma is one of the chicest ladies I know. She even changes into an evening outfit for dinner.”
Speirs’s elegance and Jensen’s humour resulted in embellished, quilted A-line skirts, cute boxy blazers (right) and primary-hued Aran knits, worn by models sporting Speirs’s Sixties-style bouffy bob, her trademark headphones (worn around the neck) and a Bernstock Speirs titfer. “It feels amazing to be Peter’s muse,” said Speirs front row. “It made me laugh a lot too.”
