Ah, distressed denim, the great style divider. It’s like fashion’s West Side Story: the uptown élégantes versus weekender tomboys. Love or hate it, it’s everywhere: frayed, split and faded. Sarah Harris at Vogue is a fan. “It’s a nice antidote to overly worked, printed or coloured denim – it feels like an old favourite,” she says. “And it’s so comfortable. The key is to offset it with something polished, like a jacket and heels, for a perfect high-low mix.”
Lisa Armstrong at The Daily Telegraph doesn’t agree. “I absolutely hate it!” she says. Enough said. But whatever your position, what we’re seeing is a return to classic, basic denim, ageing naturally. Beware of looking a bit Eighties Bros – the key is to keep it relaxed and modern.
“Denim is such a democratic wardrobe component and provides a great alternative to the opulent look,” says Net-A-Porter’s Fashion Director, Holli Rogers. “Wear ripped boyfriend styles with amazing heels, or skinnies with flat ankle boots.”
